Think Coverage When Buying Auto Insurance
Get peace of mind for your individual needs
Buying auto insurance today can almost be as confusing as selecting the car itself considering all of the advertising competition on the Internet, on TV, and even in the mail.
"Going strictly on price comparisons is not the way to purchase car insurance," counsels Frank Capparelle, Sr., President of Phoenix-based AnCap Insurance, an independent insurance agency that represents multiple insurance companies. "The most important thing today is the liability coverage you buy in the policy. Everything else is just secondary."
Arizona law requires all drivers to carry liability insurance, which covers the damages caused by your vehicle both to people and property. Determining the amount needed must be viewed in terms of today's dollars.
"I see too many people with $100,000/$300,000 liability coverage which is what we sold in the 1980's," says Frank. "That protection will go quickly if you have an accident today and think one person or everyone's medical bills will be paid completely by insurance."
"For many people who have assets to lose, that coverage won't be sufficient. We recommend $250,000/$500,000 with a one million dollar umbrella. This will give you peace of mind that an accident won't force you into bankruptcy," continues Frank.
Additional coverage can be applied to your insurance policy depending upon your budget, risk tolerance, and personal preferences. Options include:
- Comprehensive coverage which pays for replacing the vehicle in the event of theft, vandalism and other unexpected incidents that may not be related to driving.
- Collision coverage which pays for damages to your vehicle that have been caused by you.
Both comprehensive and collision coverage come with your choice of deductible ranging from $250 to 1,000, which is the amount you will pay out-of-pocket before the insurance kicks in. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium charged for the policy.
- Towing
- Rental reimbursement
- Glass coverage (if comprehensive and collision coverage has been added)
- Accident forgiveness
- Ticket forgiveness
- Waiver of deductible for uninsured motorists
- New car replacement cost
- GAP coverage
- Decreasing deductible
"Just as different cars showcase different features, not all insurance companies offer every option," explains Frank. "So when you are reviewing your auto policy, be sure to look inside and read the fine print to determine exactly what kind and how much insurance coverage you have. We'll be glad to help you sort it all out."
